Adam Idah, an Old Firm hero, is thrilled to have received the endorsement of Chris Sutton, as the former Hoops player pushed his former team to sign the striker to a long-term contract.
However, the man from Norwich who was borrowed acknowledges that while the Hoops are vying for the Premiership title and the Scottish Cup, any plans to fulfill Sutty’s wish are on hold. Idah has scored six goals in just nine games since going on loan in January, including a fantastic goal in the thrilling 3-3 Old Firm match last weekend.
Columnist for Record Sport and former Canary Sutton has seen enough to know that the hitman is valuable. But Idah’s only thinking about the here and now, like taking down St Mirren today in preparation for Aberdeen’s Scottish Cup match the following weekend. “I honestly haven’t been looking into what I’m going to do,” he remarked. My primary goal has been to win as many games as I can before the season ends. That is what the team and I are primarily aiming for.
“I don’t know about other players, but on the field, it can hurt me if I look too far ahead. After a successful season, I want to watch what happens.
Naturally, hearing comments like that from elite players is very flattering. When you hear the club might be interested in you, it certainly boosts your confidence. It gives you a true sense of belonging to this club. I truly appreciate being here, and I want to give it everything I’ve got to end on a positive note.
Idah’s move north has paid off, and he is savouring the moment. “I have a lot more minutes, the manager has a lot of faith in me, and the boys are accustomed to me and my football style,” he continued. You do start to feel confident in yourself when other people start to trust you and you achieve that first objective.
“Even small things matter a lot, like having your supporters’ back.” That greatly aided me and gives me more desire to strive for improvement.
A much later stunner in stoppage time by Rabbi Matondo negated Idah’s dramatic late strike at Ibrox. Yet in the race for the title, it might still prove to be a crucial objective. “It was definitely an amazing feeling,” Idah remarked. It’s insane to score in that derby. It’s probably the only game a player wants to score in when they want to play for Celtic because it’s so important. Who knows what will happen at the end of the season. It was a little odd and reminiscent of the Covid era. It was an unusual encounter.
“Going into the game, the goal was to try to score and win. I know now that you have to play until the very last whistle. Even though we didn’t go overboard and regrettably didn’t receive the full three points, we’ll still accept the point. Any player scoring a goal obviously benefits from it, especially in terms of confidence. I’m having a great time playing up here. I think I’m more confident than I’ve ever been.
“You can probably tell by the goals that when I’m on the field and in general, it’s probably the best I have played.”
Idah acknowledges that manager Brendan Rodgers has been instrumental. He stated: “You can see I’ve improved my game from the many things he does in training with me and the other attacking players. He has been a huge assistance.
“He thought he could help me improve on some of the things we discussed when I first came in. I’m trying to do that week by week and will do my best to return the favor for the faith he has placed in me.
It’s important to be that self-assured player. I didn’t feel confident and I didn’t get minutes at Norwich. Being in this situation when you’re not doing well is challenging.
It has therefore been wonderful for me to come here and have the staff and fans support me. I adore it.
