‘Make a huge difference’… Pat Nevin says signing 28-year-old striker would help Celtic win the league

Rangers have reclaimed an eight-point lead at the top of the table thanks to Celtic’s faltering play, making the race for the league title as close as it has been for the previous three seasons.

There is a title battle going on, whether Celtics supporters want to acknowledge it or not (which I don’t), and it has more to do with Brendan Rodgers’ team’s dismal performance than anything else.

The stakes on winning this season’s Scottish Premiership are bigger than ever, with a potential £60 million pot of gold waiting for the winners through automatic qualification to the Champions League.

Celtic will also need to start stepping up their performances and goal scoring because Rangers are closing in on them.

Pat Nevin believes that if Celtic made a single move during the January transfer window, it may tip the scales in their favor and keep the Championship trophy in the Celtic Park trophy cabinet.

Nevin stated [Scottish Football Podcast] that, in terms of percentage (of winning the league), he would take Celtic 55-45.

The catch is that it will depend on what happens to forwards over the course of the next four or five days and whether Rangers get another.

“Many people have brought up Shankland. It changes if you stick him up front for the Rangers at this moment. It would shift much more in Celtic’s favor if Shankland was moved upfront.

“What they do with a striker over the next few days will have a significant impact.”

As I’ve said many times before, I don’t think Shankland is the striker who can lead Celtic to success in Europe.

But the Hearts player has shown over the last two seasons that he has a good eye for goal as a striker in the SPFL.

Shankland tops the SPFL goalscoring charts with 19 goals so far this season. In 47 games during the previous season, the Scotland international also scored 28 goals. Imagine the damage he could cause on national defenses if he played for a team like Celtic.

Shankland is expected to cost roughly £3 million, therefore Celtic would be wise to bring him  in to help win the championship and secure Champions League football worth £60 millions
