Kenny Miller has named one SPFL star that could interest Rangers and Celtic – but reckons he would be more of a project signing at this stage.

Glasgow’s big two have missed out on the likes of Aaron Hickey, Josh Doig, Lewis Ferguson and John McGinn in recent times with all going on to make big impacts in Italy and England. Scotland skipper Andy Robertson is another who left Dundee United for Hull City before going on to star for Liverpool and win the English Premier League and Champions League

Lawrence Shankland is the name that hasn’t disappeared from the headlines as pundits continually link the Hearts star to the Old Firm to provide more firepower in their striker ranks. He is arguably one of the best players outside the big two, but it is a youngster from Motherwell that has caught the eye of Miller as one who could potentially make the step up.

“I still think if he was to be signed by either of the Old Firm, it would be more of one of those projects because he’s not been in the first-team long enough to go and show what he can do. He’s still very young as well. Rangers and Celtic over the years have definitely just handpicked the best players in the league but they seem to have moved away from that in the last ten years or so.”

Gordon Dalziel agreed, adding: “I think Kenny makes a good point about young Miller at Motherwell. I think he’s got terrific potential. He’s been injured as well so I think he’s got to concentrate on getting himself back, but he’s certainly one for the future. There’s not a lot out there.

“I think the days gone by where guys like Scott Brown and Kevin Thomson were coming through, you had quite a few. Clubs like Dundee United seemed to produce quite a few as well. I don’t think there’s quite the same standard just now if you look through our leagues.

“There’s plenty of opportunities for clubs to give younger players an opportunity to go and play. But I don’t see the next Scott Brown just now, it may take another season.
