After joining from Rapid Vienna, Nicolas Kuhn made his Celtics debut on Saturday in the team’s 1-0 victory over Ross County.
Michael Stewart told The Scottish Football Product that if and when Celtic acquire new players, they must be “starting XI” acquisitions, regardless of whether that happens this month or in the summer.
Without a sure, the cat has more than enough money; the only thing to wonder is why this month has seen the arrival of just one new face.
Brendan Rodgers’ sudden return to the team this summer startled a lot of people, but it’s safe to say he signed on to help the squad advance in Europe as well.
If there’s one thing the Irishman has to establish, it’s that he can compete in the Champions League, and he needs support to make that happen.
Michael Stewart brought that up while talking about the kinds of transactions that Celtic need to seal.
January transfer window for Celtic
Stewart stated, “They need to sign some starting XI players.” It appears unlikely to occur during the January window.
“But, in order to advance, they will undoubtedly need to sign some players in the summer who will bolster that starting lineup.
Brendan Rodgers returned to Celtic with the intention of pushing the team forward and, one assumes, taking a serious whack at Europe.
“They haven’t been able to do that yet due to a number of those reasons, including the disruption to their starting XI at the moment and lack of progress in the transfer market.”
Added pressure
If very little business is done from now until the end of the window, then it only just increases the pressure on Rodgers.
Yes, the team is sitting top of the table, but it is pretty clear that the performances have been below par.
The win over Ross County, and the crowd reaction at the full-time whistle, was a prime example of that.
Yes, you can look at the positives and say if the levels increase, then Celtic will steamroll to the title.
But if that doesn’t happen, then it will only spell trouble during these coming months.
