MYSTIFIED Celtic supporters are eager to see South Korean midfielder Kwon Hyeon-kyu in a competitive setting for the first time.
The winger Yang Hyun-jun and the anchorman came in July as part of a £1 million trade from K-League team Busan IPark, with an initial £850,000 plus add-ons.
With a reputation for being a fierce ball-winner in the heart of the field, Under-21 international Kwon participated for 45 minutes in Athletic Bilbao’s Testimonial Match at Parkhead at the beginning of August. That evening, Brendan Rodgers used 22 players from his first-team roster.
A few days prior, in the 61st minute of Dublin’s Aviva Stadium’s 1-1 tie with Wolves, the 22-year-old enforcer also replaced Matt O’Riley.
Other than that, the Hoops’ enigmatic player has not been seen, despite being included in the matchday roster for the home game against Hearts last weekend. He has only been ineligible for play four times, yet he has not yet played a single minute with the Hornets.
In addition, Rodgers left Kwon off of the 25-man roster he had submitted to UEFA prior to the Champions League Group B matches against Atletico Madrid, Lazio, and Feyenoord.
With little chance of the midfielder, who inked a five-year deal in the summer, getting any closer to making his first-team debut, the situation has grown perplexing.
Maybe the transfer window that opens next month may offer an answer.
