Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has welcomed the possibility of the SPFL enforcing the use of grass pitches in the Scottish Premiership.

It was reported by The Daily Record earlier in the week that SPFL Chief Executive Neil Doncaster has held talks about banning artificial surfaces in the top-flight.

It’s said that a rule could even be introduced by the end of the season, with a grace period for teams to make the necessary changes to their pitches.

Further discussions will be held in the new year ahead of a potential vote on the issue.

Currently, Livingston and Kilmarnock are the only Premiership sides to have astroturf but Killie have intentions to scrap theirs in the coming years.

Asked about the possibility of an SPFL rule changes on pitches, Rodgers said in a media conference today: “It’s a constant conversation. It’s clear that every coach would want to play on a grass pitch. I think the sooner that is a possibility up here then the better it will be for everyone.

“I understand the economics of it all and what it’ll mean to some clubs. But there should be a certain level and a certain standard that every team, if you’re playing in the top-flight, should have a grass pitch.”

Kilmarnock v Celtic - Scottish Ladbrokes Premiership

Celtic play at Rugby Park this weekend on one of the troublesome surfaces. It’s the venue of the Bhoys’ only domestic defeat this season.

There can be no excuses when it comes to picking up the three points regardless of the pitch. Celtic have the ability to win and win comfortably there. It’s on the team to show the attitude and application to get that job done.

In the coming years, however, it would be nice to see grass at every stadium in the country. It seems some have had enough of the status quo, including Rodgers.
