When rumors circulated that Celtic was interested in signing Tiago Araujo of Estoril for a possible £4 million January deal, you didn’t need a doctorate in divination to deduce that this would probably be the beginning of the end for Alexandro Bernabei’s Parkhead career.
Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers had both tried and failed to force the Argentine to give up the left-back position to Greg Taylor.
It was also difficult to imagine that the possible arrival of Estoril’s highly-rated Portuguese flyer, Araujo, would not result in Alexandro Bernabei packing his bags, especially after The Telegraph reported that Celtic had made an enquiry for the £4 million-rated player.
Celtic eyes a deal with Tiago Araujo
Indeed, the player who signed for £3.75 million from Lanus in 2022 is among the five who have supposedly been informed that they can choose to pursue a new beginning during the winter.
Celtic have opened their doors to Yosuke Ideguchi, Yuki Kobayashi, Benjamin Siegrst, James McCarthy, and their infrequently seen southpaw, according to Football Scotland. This season, Bernabei has only played 43 minutes of football, and Rodgers even left him off of their Champions League roster.
In March, former hoops hero Kris Commons told the Daily Mail, “Alexandro Bernabei has been a disappointing signing thus far.”
“Last summer, Celtic signed him from Argentina for £3.75 million. However, Taylor has had an incredible season in the end.
“Taylor is correct to have kept Bernabei off the team.”
Despite his incredible speed and perseverance, Bernabei has repeatedly encountered the same issues as a Celtic player. Bernabei’s club and thump approach has frequently proven ineffectual in a team accustomed to controlling possession domestically and frequently needing a surgeon’s scalpel to open up a massed ranks of opposition defenders.
In other words, he lacks Taylor’s tactical adaptability and technical attributes.
In Scotland, Alexandro Bernabei has had difficulties.
Time will tell if Araujo has the qualities Bernabei does not.
This season, left-back has contributed two goals and three assists. The former Portugal Under-21 international appears to possess Taylor’s final-third poise and timing when making decisions. Additionally, Arauji seems more than capable of playing the kind of quick-combination football Rodgers desires. He can deceive the opposition by dovetailing nicely with the winger ahead of him on the flank and using deft little touches, clever flicks, and intelligent movement.
Meanwhile, Bernabei will be remembered as an anomaly in a long line of hits for Celtic’s hiring department.
