In the midweek victory over Hibs, the Hoops manager went back in time by assigning the captain to his former attacking role.
Oh’s early goal made the evening rather simple, but the manager demanded that his captain really set the tone. This man has astonishingly started every game for his team and nation in 2023, and he doesn’t appear to be slowing down at all.
And it was more than simply McGregor’s forward play that revived memories for Rodgers. Additionally, he notices a number of parallels with another relic from Celtic history.
“He’s a brilliant example for the other players,” stated Aaron Rodgers. He embodies all the qualities of the perfect football player, including mental toughness, system interpretation skills, competitiveness, physical bravery, and quality.
“He’s the perfect football player to have on your team. He strongly reminds me of our previous captain, Brown, who I had when I first came here. Only that unwavering mindset. He’s game for any game. He truly serves as an inspiration to his teammates.
“Every game is like his last, he’s dependable, and he’s always there. He’s an incredible entertainer.
Another concern that has dogged the Hoops star for the most of his career was raised by McGregor’s smooth transition to a new role.
What is his ideal position exactly? The 30-year-old initially received opportunities under Ronny Delia as a winger, or perhaps a striker. Under Rodgers’ initial coaching staff, he developed into an attacking midfielder but also had periods of time spent playing left back or wing back.
After Brown departed, he appeared to be a natural fit for the deeper position, setting up plays and getting the ball through the pitch swiftly.
He was the conductor who kept everything running under Ange Postecoglou and has done a variety of jobs under national head Steve Clarke. According to Rodgers, it doesn’t really matter where he plays because he is a top drawer player everywhere.
“Every player has a favorite position,” he stated. I believe it will be somewhere in the middle of the field.
“He was that number eight or ten in his younger days, really getting forward, rushing, and scoring goals.
