Brendan Rodgers reveals a key player is doubtful

After defender Cameron Carter-Vickers was replaced at halftime in Wednesday night’s 4-1 victory over Hibernian, Celtic is awaiting his return.

At the half, Nat Phillips took Carter-Vickers’ position. After the game, manager Brendan Rodgers acknowledged that he had felt a hamstring problem and had been pulled off as a precaution.

The Celtic manager is currently awaiting word on his recovery in time for Sunday’s Scottish Premiership trip to Ayrshire.

News regarding the Celtic team ahead of Kilmarnock Rodgers responded to a question about the team’s condition on Friday afternoon on Sky Sports by saying, “They’re in a good place.” Just a quick check on one or two. We shall see how Cameron Carter-Vickers, who seemed off, turns out. Other than that, nobody fresh is joining the squad.

The Celtics manager continued, “We’ll assess Cameron over the next couple of days,” during his press conference. Even though he didn’t pull his hamstring, we still had to get an MRI to make sure everything was well. All we can do is wait for the outcome of that. He stands a chance to play if the scan yields no results.

Fortunately, other than the uncertainty surrounding the USA international, there are no new difficulties.

Carter-Vickers should be rested even though missing a game would not be ideal if it helps him avoid a more serious injury. Interestingly, he did not appear in any of the training photos that were released today.

Liam Scales and Nat Phillips are contenders to start in the starting lineup. Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke’s training contributions have also been acknowledged by Rodgers.

Nawrocki isn’t registered for the upcoming UEFA Champions League clash at home to Feyenoord so it might not make much sense to bring him in if Carter-Vickers is also going to be rested for the mid-week fixture. Fans have been eager to see more of him after his summer move from Legia but injuries have severely hampered his progress. It seems more likely at this point that Rodgers will stick with defensive consistency until the winter break when things can then be re-assessed.
