The assertion made by former striker Chris Sutton that he is merely “going through the motions” at the Bhoys this season has been categorically denied by Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.
After recent losses to Kilmarnock and Hearts, Sutton delivered a critical assessment of the Celtic manager’s performance since returning to the team in the summer, implying that something is wrong with Rodgers’ approach to the campaign.
In light of these outcomes, criticism of the group and the manager is appropriate, but Rodgers has stated he is currently giving Celtic his all and that he never accepts a task without fully dedicating himself to it.
Brendan Rodgers on remarks made by Chris Sutton
Over the weekend, the Celtic manager addressed Sutton’s remarks, saying [Daily Record, 23/12 print edition]: “If I were to just go through the motions in anything, I wouldn’t be sitting here. I had no notable playing background or career. In the game, I had to battle for everything I had.
That is the way it will always be. In my tenure as a young manager and coach, I have never been given any special treatment. Therefore, no, I haven’t just gone through the motions; that much is certain.
“I take no notice of it. Since we lost, I suppose there was criticism, but I’m not sure where or from whom it originated. That is a part of a manager’s job description. You acquire the ability to control that. With experience, I also avoid using too much emotion when speaking.
“I make logical assessments of things, and the truth is that we fell short. for whatever cause. We were not good enough against Kilmarnock or Hearts in the second half. As a team, we can learn from that. That presents a challenge, in part.
This season, Rodgers has had to defend his allegiance to Celtic on multiple occasions. There are still some who don’t believe he’s “all in” on the project, even though he speaks frequently about his plans to make the club successful in the future.
This season, Rodgers has struggled at the Bhoys in a number of areas. Indeed, he bears the final blame for subpar outcomes.
But I’ve never thought of him as a man who wishes he could be somewhere else. He made a significant choice to return to Celtic, so I don’t think it’s appropriate to imply that he’s always searching for a way out.
If you have concerns about his recruiting, team choices, or tactics—all of that is legitimate—at least give him some serious thought. Now that he is here, there’s no denying that he will be driven to put together a Celtic team that wins, which is what we all want.
