Chris Sutton is quite concerned about the path Celtic is taking and is dismayed by Brendan Rodgers’ inability to extract the maximum performance from the team’s greatest players.

On Wednesday night, the Bhoys defeated Hibernian to resume their winning ways, but their display lacked conviction.

Due to inconsistent play throughout the season and a glut of lost opportunities against lower-tier opponents, Celtic finds themselves in one of the most competitive championship races in recent memory.

Yogo Furuhashi’s form worries Sutton the most, and he doesn’t think the player is solely to blame for his decline in performance.

Chris Sutton on his worries about Celtics

This past weekend, he declared, “Kyogo Furuhashi is having his influence absolutely killed,” in his Daily Record column. There’s a good likelihood that it will cause Celtic’s title campaign to deteriorate gradually. Despite his public declaration that he needs quality, Brendan Rodgers is unable to extract the maximum performance from the finest striker in the nation. He is no longer included in the side.

Could that eventually lead to him looking to leave if it keeps up? From being the most feared forward in Scotland, Kyogo is now hardly given any opportunities to play. It’s really pretty amazing, and in my opinion, the boy isn’t really the main factor.

Observing what has transpired with the Japanese people in recent months is nearly painful. Last season, the player made 31 starts and scored 27 goals in the league. 21 in 8 this season. The issue is the decline in levels surrounding him. Not Kyogo. That is due to his supply line’s slipping standards. Rodgers hasn’t been able to supply him, but Ange Postecoglou has.

“We always hearing about the need for pace, yet Celtic have a person with the best feet and brains, who hasn’t been able to play to his full potential because the club has been playing passably for the majority of the season. If Brendan is unable to bring out the best in Kyogo, then it is his fault.

It will be interesting to watch if Kyogo starts Sunday afternoon’s Scottish Cup match against St Mirren again. After his midweek double, Adam Idah has a good chance of being chosen again.

The Japanese forward would benefit from a game or two away from the club to give him a little rest and enable him to play the last few games of the season at his best.

Ultimately, though, Sutton is correct. It’s difficult to envision Celtic winning trophies in the league or cup if Kyogo doesn’t start playing at his best any time soon.
