Johnston’s Celtic career has been a mixed bag thus far; he seems to be circling the drain due to his history of injuries and his inability to find stability and consistent form despite his obvious natural ability. The way things have turned out for the academy graduate is truly unfortunate, as both the team and he had great expectations that he could take on the role of winger and make it his own for many years to come.

Again, it appeared as though an indifferent period was imminent, and given Brendan Rodgers’ desire for consistent quality in his team, it’s possible that Mikey’s fate has already been signed, sealed, and delivered. Nonetheless, the rising star from home admits his shortcomings and promises to work on improving them. “When you’re chasing a goal, sometimes it can be harder for the first one to go in,” he said in an interview with Celtic TV following the Dundee game. They can continue coming after the first one enters.

“I had an injury at the beginning of the season, so those first few games were like preseason.” I’ve just played well in some games and it hasn’t happened in others. I need to work on that last action to boost my stats for the team because I haven’t scored or assisted yet. My goals are to score more goals and provide assists; the more I can do to support the team, the better.

After all the sacrifices they had to make to spend Christmas Day apart from their families and work hard for three points in unimpressive circumstances, Johnston also took the time to commend his teammates.

“I’m delighted because the boys have all left their families for Christmas,” he continued, “and it’s even better that we scored a couple of goals and got the win.” We had the lead and were pulling away from the game, but you never know when a team can sneak a goal in. We need to win all of our games in December, so this is a huge three points going forward, but we won’t take anything for granted.
