“100%”: A former SFA official thinks VAR let Celtic win yesterday’s match against Dundee.

Since VAR’s launch more than a year ago, Celtic have experienced several setbacks. They have gained advantages as well.

This season, in the moments before Perth’s goal, the refereeing technology failed to flag a handball against St Johnstone.

Fortunately, Celtic overcame it to win the match 3-1. However, the league table might appear completely different if they didn’t.

But it appears that Brendan Rodgers’ team benefited from VAR in the 1-1 draw with Motherwell, as the technology did not step in to dismiss Greg Taylor for an ankle-high challenge on a Motherwell player.

It’s just swings and roundabouts, I suppose. That is, unless it ultimately hurts Celtic in cup or league competitions.

And it appears that Des Roache, a former SFA Grade 1 referee, that VAR let the Hoops down once more.

examining the video of Joe Shaughnessy and Trevor Carson of Dundee hauling Cameron Carter-Vickers around. Before pushing the Celtic defender into the goalmouth in what appeared to be a clear foul, Carson put his hands around his face.

What did fans of the Get Involved Referee podcast X account think of the three-way fight?

The account then shared, “This is 100% a foul, according to @des_roache.”

And I must admit that I concur. Imagine that Carter-Vickers had the upper hand and had scored a touchdown while manhandling Carson.

Had the objective been given? Not at all. Would someone have called a foul? Naturally, and quite rightly so.

IFAB Law 12 states that a foul is called when:

“Any of the following offenses by a player results in a direct free kick:

A handball offense occurs when an opponent is held and prevented from making contact with them (apart from the goalkeeper who is inside their penalty area).

In my opinion and in accordance with the regulations, a penalty ought to have been given. Again, fortunately, the decision didn’t significantly affect the outcome, but there’s a good chance it will eventually and that it will have a significant impact on how the title plays out this season.
