The Round 14 clash over long-time rivals, Bulldogs and Eels will see a tie-break score settled with the Club’s each having won a match a piece since the Cup’s introduction in 2022.
The I4Give Cup, a joint initiative between Canterbury and Parramatta, is in memory of Sienna (8), Veronique (11), Angelina (12), and Antony (13), who all tragically passed away after a local drunk/drugged driver incident in Oatlands in 2020.
Danny and his wife, Leila Abdallah made waves publicly when they announced their decision to forgive the driver responsible, and have since created the i4Give Foundation in recognition of the power of forgiveness when it comes to mental health support and helping individuals prosper.
Additionally, they have created i4Give Day. A day marked on February 1st each year, as a remembrance to the four lives lost and as a national day to mark forgiveness.
The King’s Birthday Round 14 NRL fixture will see the two teams honour the memory of the Abdallah & Sakr children, and battle for the rights to the Cup which has grown to stand for resilience and the ability to overcome setbacks.
The Abdallah and Sakr families will be acknowledged at Accor Stadium during the match, and will be on-hand to present the Cup to the winning Captain.
In 2022, Josh Jackson hoisted the Cup for the Bulldogs following it’s inaugural match. It was an upset match that fans and players are unlikely to forget, toppling a grand-final bound Eels, 34-4.
Match Highlights: 2022 i4Give Cup v Eels
Last year, the Cup was taken by the Eels with Clint Gutherson accepting the trophy on-field.
This year, the Bulldogs enter the match hungry for their third straight win and to retain their perfect record at home this season. Meanwhile, the Eels also have their sights set on back to back victories in what would be the first time in their 2024 season after snapping a five-game loosing streak with a 34-22 win over the Sharks last Thursday.
A five day turn-around from Origin One will mean Captain Stephen Crichton and five-eighth Matt Burton are a good chance of backing up and joining the Bulldogs squad as they fight for the rights to the i4Give Cup this year.
The match will be played at Accor Stadium, with a family-friendly kick-off time at 4:00pm on Monday (King’s Birthday public holiday).
Tickets for the match are selling fast with the match proving to be hugely popular for local and travelling fans, but are till available for purchase at Ticketek.
To add to the excitement on match day, for every try, goal, penalty or field goal, the Club’s partners in Carroll & O’Dea Lawyers (CODEA) have pledged to make a donation in support of the i4Give Foundation’s work in the community. CODEA will generously donate $400 for every try, $200 for a conversion and penalty goal, and $100 for a field goal.
