The Gas were eliminated from the EFL Trophy after losing 2-1 against Crawley Town, and new manager Matt Taylor took control for the first time.
In his first game in charge, new Gas manager Matt Taylor of Bristol Rovers stated that he does not want “it to be a reoccurring theme that this team misses too many chances” and that “there’s always a consequence for individuals” following Rovers’ elimination from the EFL Trophy by League Two team Crawley Town.
Luke Thomas, Harvey Vale, and Aaron Collins were among the visitors who had the best chances to score during the first half. However, just before halftime, Thomas stole the ball from a Crawley player and went around the goalkeeper to score the first goal of the Taylor era.
But the hosts, who had made ten changes from their previous League Two loss to Notts County 3-1, benefited from having more regular starts on the field as the fourth-tier team made Rovers regret their wasted chances and won 2-1.
Regarding the Gas, the new manager selected a solid starting eleven, making just three changes from the 1-1 draw with Leyton Orient the previous week, while leaving some important players, like as Chris Martin and Jack Hunt, at home. Having just recently entered the building on Friday, Taylor will learn a lot about the team he is inheriting from the way his side collapsed.
“We’re only one-nil up after twenty shots, most of which were in the first half,” Taylor stated after the game. “We lost control in the second half after missing far too many opportunities in the first half. We played terribly, were unable to fill the space, and offered them a chance to reenter the game, which they gladly seized.
“We had a good first half performance, so I was happy with that since you can’t create that many opportunities while playing poorly. Complete recognition for that.
“However, you need to be ahead of the game and know what allows them to come back, which is as simple as mastering the fundamentals of every position on the football field. It is imperative that we recognize that during some game situations, we must adopt a specific playing style and temporarily set aside our individuality in order to perform fundamental football skills and sustain slight pressure.”
“I don’t want it to be a recurring theme that this team misses too many chances,” the 41-year-old continued. Although we produced some amazing chances, we were unable to convert them. We have lost the game tonight as a result.
