Brisbane Lions’ Premiership Hopes in Jeopardy: Scoring Woes Threaten Season Ambitions

Just six games into the season, Brisbane’s hopes for winning the premiership seem uncertain. Facing Greater Western Sydney on Anzac Day, they find themselves in a precarious position with a record of 2 wins and 4 losses, nearing the limit of acceptable losses for a top-four finish.

Their challenging schedule reflects the tough competition of the 2024 season. Coach Chris Fagan and his team are particularly troubled by their struggles to score goals. In previous seasons, Brisbane has been known for its high-scoring offense, consistently ranking near the top of the league in points scored. However, this year has seen a significant drop in scoring output, with the Lions currently ranked 11th, averaging only 76 points per game.

Despite dominating in key areas like inside-50 differentials and time spent in the forward half, Brisbane’s scoring efficiency has been lacking. They have faced difficulties in retaining possession after entering the attacking 50, and their contested possession differential in this area has declined. Forward players like Charlie Cameron have experienced inconsistencies in their performance, contributing to the team’s scoring woes.

Lincoln McCarthy, one of Brisbane’s standout forwards, attributes the scoring issues to various factors such as decision-making under pressure and execution errors. While there’s confidence in the team’s ability to improve, they acknowledge the need to address these issues promptly.

Brisbane’s struggles extend to conversion rates, with only two teams having worse shot accuracy. Despite flashes of their scoring potential in wins against North Melbourne and Melbourne, the team’s overall output has been below par due to inconsistent delivery, forwards losing contested battles, and poor accuracy in front of goal.

With plenty of the 2024 season remaining, Brisbane aims to rectify these issues starting with their upcoming match against the Giants, hoping to get their campaign back on track.
