A young player from the Broncos sustains a severe injury.

A promising young forward, Ethan O’Neill, aiming for an NRL contract with the Brisbane Broncos, has suffered a significant injury over the weekend. During the club’s trial match against the Manly Sea Eagles, O’Neill, son of former Origin representative Julian O’Neill, fractured his eye socket when a finger inadvertently jabbed deep into his eyeball by Manly’s Bailey Hodgson.

The incident quickly gained traction on social media platforms as O’Neill, 24, was seen immediately grabbing at his injured eye. Rushed to the hospital in the Northern Beaches, it was revealed that he would be sidelined for up to six weeks, causing him to miss the start of the NRL and QLD Cup seasons. However, there’s optimism from Brisbane Broncos officials, with Chris Muckert suggesting a potential return in four weeks.

Reflecting on the incident, O’Neill described the intense pain he felt, comparing it to a burning sensation and noting the immediate swelling and double vision. While he hasn’t heard from Hodgson, O’Neill believes it was an accidental occurrence and holds no ill will towards him.

O’Neill’s journey to the Broncos came after an impressive stint with the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the NSW Cup last season, where he played a pivotal role in their Grand Final victory. Despite facing challenges breaking through the ranks, O’Neill remains determined to earn his NRL debut, emphasizing his commitment to hard work and belief in his eventual success.
