Teui “TC” Robati, a former NRL player, must determine how to react to a sexual assault case after negotiations with prosecutors failed.
Robati, who was cut by the Brisbane Broncos in the previous season, is charged with attacking a female customer on December 21, 2022, at a bar in Brisbane.
Robati and his attorney were not present at the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday, when the case was scheduled to be mentioned.
Senior Constable Michael Colclough, the police prosecutor, informed the court that Robati’s mediation was not going to proceed.
Inquiring as to whether the case would proceed as a summary prosecution or as an indictable one—the latter being more serious and needing a higher court—Magistrate Andrew Moloney
“It depends whether he pleads guilty or not,” Colclough answered.
Robati’s attorney would receive notification, according to Mr. Moloney, and the case would be postponed until February 14 when he would be released on bond.
Next month, Robati may enter a plea, or the case may proceed to a committal procedure to ascertain whether there are enough reasons to proceed with a District Court trial.
New Zealand-born Robati could play as a second-rower or as a middle forward and impressed in his debut season of 2021, appearing in 10 NRL game
His form was not as strong in 2022 where he made just seven top-grade appearances after playing for the Maori All Stars.
He was axed by the Broncos in February 2023 before the season kick-off.
