Where the heart is, Mam’s Broncos home, Reynolds races the clock

Ezra Mam participated in training with the Brisbane Broncos for the first time since being subjected to a racial slur by Sydney Roosters prop Spencer Leniu. Mam, 21, has been receiving ongoing support from the Broncos following a challenging week after the incident occurred in Las Vegas during the NRL’s season-opening double header.

Leniu has since confessed to directing a racial slur, calling Brisbane’s No.6 a “monkey” during the match, which the Roosters won 20-10.

Broncos assistant coach John Cartwright confirmed that Mam would be playing against South Sydney in round two next Thursday, emphasizing that he is in a supportive environment surrounded by his teammates.

“Being with your teammates is the best place for a footballer,” said Cartwright. “I admire the way they’ve all rallied around each other. Ez is a fantastic young man, very well-liked within the group, and he’ll be alright. He’s handled the situation with composure, and the club has managed it well. Now it’s up to the NRL.”

The NRL judiciary will decide on Leniu’s punishment next week.

Captain Adam Reynolds, who sustained a knee injury in the game against the Roosters, underwent rehabilitation exercises with the group during Broncos’ training at Pizzey Park on the Gold Coast. Cartwright mentioned that Reynolds was experiencing some soreness but was optimistic about his availability for the upcoming match against the Rabbitohs.

Lock Patrick Carrigan also participated in rehab but is expected to be fit for round two.

In positive news for the Broncos, second-rower Brendan Piakura trained with a no-contact bib after suffering a concussion in the game against the Roosters. Cartwright indicated that Piakura will need to adhere to concussion protocols but should be available for selection once he passes the necessary tests.
