Great News: Broncos reportedly look to the open market to recruit new players

The Brisbane Broncos are reportedly seeking a second-rower ahead of their upcoming match against the Rabbitohs, following the departures of Kurt Capewell, Keenan Palasia, and Thomas Flegler. Their need for reinforcement in this position became apparent in Round 1 when Brendan Piakura sustained an early injury, forcing Patrick Carrigan to shift from his preferred lock position.

With vacancies still available on their Top 30 roster for this season, the Broncos are keen on bolstering their forward pack, particularly in the second row. The club has reached out to several NRL player agents to inquire about available forwards for potential signings this season and beyond.

Although their attempt to acquire Zac Hosking from the Penrith Panthers was unsuccessful, they did secure Jaiyden Hunt from the Dragons during the offseason. With approximately $300,000 remaining under their salary cap for this season, the Broncos have financial flexibility to pursue additional signings.

Former Broncos player Corey Parker expressed understanding regarding the team’s decision to seek reinforcements, citing the loss of Piakura in Round 1 and the subsequent shortage of depth in the forwards. He suggested that the Broncos may prioritize signing an experienced player who can immediately contribute, given the unexpected departures earlier in the season.

Currently, there are over 20 back-rowers set to become off-contract at the end of the season. Notable names include Kulikefu Finefeuiaki, Luke Garner, and Angus Crichton, along with others like Coen Hess, Klese Haas, Jaydn Su’A, Trey Mooney, and Euan Aitken. The availability of these players offers the Broncos a range of options as they seek to reinforce their squad.
