Charlton Athletic confirm release of former Huddersfield Town and Bradford City playmaker

The 29-year-old remains part of Charlton’s squad but is currently out on loan at Milton Keynes Dons, gearing up for the League Two play-offs. He has been a regular fixture under Mike Williamson this season, making 42 appearances and scoring seven goals.

MK Dons may have the option to make his loan move permanent this summer if they choose to do so. Charlton has confirmed that he will depart from The Valley this summer after spending two years with the club.

He initially joined Charlton in 2022 following an impressive season with Swindon Town in League Two. Fans of Huddersfield will recognize him as he represented the Terriers from 2016 to 2019.

Payne featured in 28 matches for Huddersfield, scoring four goals, before being allowed to leave. His final season with Huddersfield involved a loan spell at Bradford, where he managed to score nine goals and provide seven assists across 47 appearances.

Under the new leadership of Nathan Jones at Charlton, there’s been a clear intention to initiate a revamp within the club. Payne is among several senior figures, including Connor Wickham, Michael Hector, and Kazenga LuaLua, who have been released as part of this restructuring.

In their statement regarding the retained list, Charlton expressed gratitude to all departing players for their contributions during their time with the club and wished them well for their future endeavors.
