The Boston Red Sox have made a move to add some power and balance to their lineup by signing veteran first baseman C.J. Cron. The deal, as reported by MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo and confirmed by The Athletic, is a minor league deal. Cron, a former first-round pick, split his 2023 season between the Los Angeles Angels and the Colorado Rockies, appearing in 71 games. During that time, the 34-year-old slugger hit 12 home runs, drove in 37 runs, and posted an OPS of .729. The Red Sox are optimistic that Cron can replicate his performance from 2022, where he earned an All-Star selection while with the Rockies. In that standout season, Cron amassed 29 home runs and a career-high 102 RBIs. His offensive prowess extends beyond just one season, as evidenced by his impressive .905 OPS in 2018 with the Tampa Bay Rays, during which he also hit a career-high 30 home runs. While it remains uncertain what role Cron will play if he makes the big league roster, he could serve as a reliable backup to Triston Casas, who is anticipated to make significant strides in the 2024 season. Cron’s addition adds depth and experience to the Red Sox lineup, potentially providing valuable contributions throughout the season.
