Netflix has officially announced the upcoming release of Unheard Story Told, a comprehensive documentary chronicling the journey of Swedish metal band Katatonia. The film is set to premiere globally on Netflix on September 19, 2025, offering fans an intimate look into the band’s evolution over the past three decades.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sofia Lindqvist, Unheard Story Told delves deep into Katatonia’s origins, tracing their transformation from a death-doom outfit in the early ’90s to pioneers of atmospheric progressive metal. The documentary features rare archival footage, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and candid interviews with current and former band members, including vocalist Jonas Renkse and bassist Niklas Sandin.
“This documentary is a labor of love,” says Lindqvist. “We aimed to capture the essence of Katatonia’s music and the emotional depth that resonates with their fans worldwide.”
The release of Unheard Story Told coincides with the band’s recent announcement of their 13th studio album, Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State, scheduled for release on June 6, 2025. The album introduces new guitarists Nico Elgstrand and Sebastian Svalland, marking a new chapter in Katatonia’s storied career.
In anticipation of the documentary, Netflix has released a teaser trailer showcasing snippets of live performances, studio sessions, and personal moments that highlight the band’s enduring legacy.
