Netflix has officially announced the release date for its highly anticipated documentary on The Tragically Hip, one of Canada’s most iconic rock bands. The film, titled Ahead by a Century: The Story of The Tragically Hip, is set to premiere on Netflix globally on May 15, 2025.
The documentary will take fans on a deep dive into the band’s illustrious career, spanning over three decades of music, activism, and cultural influence. Featuring never-before-seen archival footage, exclusive interviews with band members, and personal insights from close friends and industry experts, the film aims to celebrate the legacy of Gord Downie and his bandmates.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sarah Polley, Ahead by a Century will explore The Tragically Hip’s rise to fame in Canada, their struggles with international recognition, and the powerful connection they formed with their fans. The documentary will also highlight the band’s emotional farewell tour in 2016 following Downie’s diagnosis with terminal brain cancer, culminating in their unforgettable final performance in Kingston, Ontario.
