Netflix has officially announced the upcoming release of a brand-new music documentary, Roots and Riffs: The Dead South, chronicling the meteoric rise and raw authenticity of the beloved Canadian folk-bluegrass band. Set to premiere globally on June 21, 2025, the film promises fans an unprecedented look into the journey, challenges, and triumphs of the group that turned prairie grit into a global phenomenon.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Emily Carter, known for her intimate portrayals of musicians in Strings of the North and The Heart of Americana, the documentary traces the band’s roots in Saskatchewan to their international breakthrough with viral hits like “In Hell I’ll Be in Good Company.” Through archival footage, never-before-seen behind-the-scenes moments, and deeply personal interviews, Roots and Riffs captures the spirit of a band that dared to defy genre boundaries and expectations.
The film dives into the band’s early struggles, including near breakups, grueling tours in battered vans, and the skepticism they faced within the traditional bluegrass scene. It also explores the camaraderie and creative tension between founding members Nate Hilts, Scott Pringle, Danny Kenyon, and Colton Crawford, whose bond and banjo-fueled energy forged a sound both haunting and joyful.
Netflix’s Vice President of Music Content, Maya Lennox, shared her excitement:
“The Dead South’s story is one of perseverance, reinvention, and the power of raw, unapologetic artistry. This documentary is a celebration of that spirit — a tribute to the dust, sweat, and soul behind every note they play.”
Fans can expect rare acoustic sessions filmed in remote Canadian landscapes, commentary from fellow artists and producers, and an in-depth look at the band’s unique visual identity, including their signature suspenders-and-hats aesthetic that became as iconic as their music.
In conjunction with the documentary, Netflix will also release a companion live album featuring stripped-down versions of the band’s biggest hits and a few surprise collaborations.
