Netflix has officially announced the release date for its upcoming documentary centered on Metallica’s legendary lead guitarist, Kirk Hammett. Titled Kirk Hammett: The Collection, the film is set to premiere on May 24, 2025, offering fans an intimate look into the life and career of one of heavy metal’s most influential figures.
The documentary delves deep into Hammett’s musical journey, tracing his early days with the thrash metal band Exodus to his four-decade tenure with Metallica. Viewers will gain unprecedented access to Hammett’s extensive guitar collection, including iconic instruments like the 1979 Gibson Flying V and the famed 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard, known as “Greeny,” previously owned by Peter Green and Gary Moore.
In conjunction with the documentary, Hammett has partnered with Gibson Publishing to release a 400-page coffee table book, also titled The Collection: Kirk Hammett. This publication showcases his vast array of guitars, photographed in various locations such as Hawaii and Los Angeles, and includes exclusive interviews conducted by Gibson Editor-in-Chief Chris Vinnicombe and Director of Brand Experience Mark Agnesi.
To promote both the documentary and the book, Hammett will embark on a series of live discussion events across North America. These sessions, titled “Kirk Hammett The Collection: Live,” will feature in-depth conversations about his career and the stories behind his most treasured instruments. Scheduled stops include Toronto, Nashville, Columbus, Philadelphia, Tampa, and Denver, with tickets available through kvhcollection.com.
Fans can also catch Hammett’s cameo in the Netflix film Metal Lords, where he appears alongside fellow metal icons Tom Morello, Scott Ian, and Rob Halford.
Kirk Hammett: The Collection promises to be a must-watch for music enthusiasts, offering a comprehensive look at the artistry and legacy of a true guitar virtuoso.
