Angel Reese, the dynamic forward for the Chicago Sky, is entering her sophomore WNBA season with renewed determination and a clear vision for her future—both on and off the court. After a standout rookie year that saw her break records and establish herself as a formidable presence in the league, Reese is now focused on elevating her game and laying the groundwork for a potential coaching career.
Selected seventh overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft, Reese quickly made her mark by setting the league’s single-season rebounding record and earning a spot on the All-Rookie Team. Despite these achievements, the Sky’s overall performance left much to be desired, finishing the season with a disappointing 13–27 record and missing the playoffs. The season’s end was further marred by Reese suffering a hairline fracture in her left wrist, requiring surgery and sidelining her for the final games.
The offseason brought significant changes to the Sky’s organization, most notably the hiring of head coach Tyler Marsh, known for his emphasis on player development. Marsh has expressed a commitment to expanding Reese’s role, particularly on offense, aiming to transform her into a more versatile player who can contribute both inside and on the perimeter. Reese has embraced this challenge, stating, “I always just tell myself if I work out and make the shots, I might as well take them in the game” .
In addition to her WNBA commitments, Reese participated in the inaugural season of the Unrivaled 3-on-3 league during the offseason. Her team, Rose BC, clinched the championship, and Reese’s performance earned her the league’s Defensive Player of the Year award. This experience not only allowed her to refine her skills but also provided a platform to learn from seasoned veterans, further fueling her aspirations beyond her playing career.
Reese has openly discussed her interest in coaching, indicating a desire to remain connected to the game after her playing days conclude. She has expressed admiration for coaches who prioritize player development and culture-building, qualities she sees in Coach Marsh. “We have great veteran leadership and coaches that just built a culture from the beginning and built the standards, so I’m excited,” Reese remarked .
