Devin Townsend’s Epic Rock Opera The Moth Set for Late 2025 Release with Steve Vai Collaboration
In a dream-come-true moment for fans, Devin Townsend has officially announced that The Moth—his long-awaited orchestral rock opera co-created with guitar legend Steve Vai—will be released in November 2025. The project, years in the making, is the centerpiece of Townsend’s current creative trilogy, following the release of PowerNerd in 2024 and preceding the upcoming experimental album Axolotl.
Townsend revealed the release date during a recent stop on his PowerNerd North American tour, surprising fans with an extended trailer featuring sweeping orchestral arrangements, surreal visuals, and a blistering solo from Vai himself. “The Moth is dark, theatrical, uncomfortable, and honest,” Townsend said. “It’s about transformation—the beauty and terror of change—and working with Steve has brought that vision to life in a way only he could.”
The album is being described as a “rock opera for the modern age,” blending Devin’s trademark wall-of-sound production with operatic vocals, cinematic soundscapes, and blistering progressive metal. Early reports hint at a deeply emotional narrative inspired by personal loss, psychological exploration, and cosmic metaphors—territory both artists are uniquely equipped to explore.
Even more exciting, The Moth will be accompanied by a limited theatrical tour starting in December 2025, featuring a live orchestra, visual storytelling, and immersive set design. Pre-orders for the album and tickets for the premiere performances will open this summer.
For longtime fans of Townsend and Vai, this isn’t just a collaboration—it’s a merging of two visionary minds at the peak of their creative powers. As Devin put it during the announcement: “We’re not just releasing an album. We’re inviting people into a world.”
