Valkyries Face Criticism Over Kate Martin’s Starting Lineup Omission
Fans Express Discontent as Rising Star Benched for Inaugural Game
Golden State — The Golden State Valkyries may have made their long-anticipated WNBA debut, but not all eyes were on the final score. Instead, much of the post-game discussion has been centered around a surprising coaching decision — the omission of rookie fan-favorite Kate Martin from the starting lineup in the team’s inaugural game.
Martin, a standout from the University of Iowa and a beloved teammate of NCAA star Caitlin Clark, was drafted by the Las Vegas Aces before being selected by the Valkyries in the expansion draft. Since arriving in Golden State, Martin quickly built a strong rapport with fans, thanks to her gritty playing style, leadership qualities, and humility. Many expected her to be a foundational player in the franchise’s debut campaign.
However, when the starting five were announced ahead of the Valkyries’ opening matchup, Martin’s name was conspicuously absent. Instead, she began the game on the bench, sparking immediate backlash from fans across social media platforms and even in the stands at Chase Center.
“Kate Martin earned her spot,” one X (formerly Twitter) user posted. “She’s not just a fan favorite—she’s a baller. Leaving her out of the starting five was disrespectful.”
Others questioned the coaching strategy of Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase, whose decision was seen by some as overly conservative. “You need someone with heart and hustle to set the tone. That’s Kate,” said longtime WNBA analyst Lisa Hartwell during a post-game segment. “If this was about sending a message, it backfired.”
While Nakase defended her decision by citing matchups and rotational strategy, she also emphasized Martin’s importance to the team. “Kate is a huge part of our plans,” Nakase told reporters after the game. “She’s still working through a minor hand injury from training camp, and we’re being cautious. She’ll have her moment.”
Martin, ever poised, didn’t show any signs of frustration in her post-game interview. “I’m just grateful to be here and help this team however I can,” she said. “Whether it’s starting, coming off the bench, or just being the loudest voice on the sideline—I’m here for all of it.”
Despite not starting, Martin saw limited minutes and made a noticeable impact with her hustle on both ends of the court. Still, many fans remain unsatisfied with the decision and are calling for her inclusion in the starting lineup moving forward.
With the Valkyries set to face the Phoenix Mercury next, all eyes will once again be on whether the coaching staff adjusts their rotation. For now, the conversation around Kate Martin’s role continues to dominate headlines—and fan emotions.
