After losing five of their previous six Championship games, Jon Dahl Tomasson says that nobody at Blackburn Rovers is happy.
Rovers suffered their worst performance of the season on Boxing Day, losing to Huddersfield Town handily. It came after a depressing late loss to Watford the previous Saturday, a game they dominated for a significant chunk of time.
Rovers, who have lost 13 of their 24 Championship games this season, have had an uneven season. The bottom three in the division have suffered the most losses.
Conversely, they have won ten times, and only six teams have scored more three points than them. It highlights once further how their performances are akin to Jekyll and Hyde.
They are currently 15th on the table, which is their lowest position in a long time. They had won three of their previous four games before falling 3-1 at Hillsborough, so their five losses in six games have come as a shock.
Tomasson stated that he accepts accountability for the run and that no one at the club is satisfied with the team’s performance and form right now.
“Today was not good,” Tomasson remarked. “We have participated in and won a number of games over the season.
“We had the worst performance of the season today. At halftime, I could have changed things up more than twice.
The positive aspect of football is that this team has a history of outstanding unity and energy. That is this team’s strong suit.
“Nobody is happy, including them. I accept responsibility for the players’ and my own disappointment.
“We didn’t hit our numbers, I think we were second best in everything today.”
Huddersfield’s first goal of the game came at a critical moment after Rovers had established a respectable lead. They appeared in control and had 85% of the possession in the first fifteen minutes, but they did not really put Chris Maxwell, the Huddersfield goalkeeper, to the test.
But Tomasson said the opening game really lifted the audience and the home team. Leopold Wahlstedt would feel he could have done a better job with Jahiem Headley’s shot, which crawled under him, the Rovers head coach acknowledged.
Huddersfield became the team to watch from that point on. They were first to every second ball, got the ball back, and applied more pressure. A special pain in their side was Delano Burgzorg, who used his quickness to successfully stretch the defense during a counterattack.
Manager Darren Moore stated that the hosts had attempted to take advantage of the increased opportunities for counterattack that Rovers gave up in possession.
Tomasson believed that Rovers’ issues stemmed from the possession’s persistent negligence.
“I think most of all, when we conceded the first goal, it gave them confidence,” he said.
“The players gained confidence and the audience rallied behind them, and that made a significant difference. At first, I felt that it was really equal and that we were in the commanding position.
“But as we all know, goals alter games, and the first goal altered everything.
“We distributed a great deal of extra balls, and when those balls were lost, we were dispersed. We must acknowledge that Huddersfield performed admirably.”
