Shane Ferguson, a former Birmingham City loanee, is looking for a new team after the club declined to renew his contract.

On Tuesday, Rotherham United released its retained list, which included Ferguson as one of 11 players who were no longer required. The Millers, who will play in League One with Blues, have allowed returning manager Steve Evans to put his stamp on the side, and he does not include Ferguson in his plans.

This season, the 32-year-old only appeared in nine Championship games and did not play from August to February. Ferguson returned from injury and played little under Leam Richardson. He only appeared once under Evans, as a substitute in the final game of the season against Cardiff City.

First-team manager Steve Evans explained the decision to the official club website: “We have had honest and open discussions with players in and out of contract and have had to make some really difficult decisions, but each one has been made with the future of Rotherham United at the forefront of our priorities.”

“I’d like to place on-record that everyone in the building has been a pleasure to work with since I walked through the door and those departing the club do so with our very best wishes.”

The 57-time Northern Ireland international leaves the New York Stadium following three seasons and 82 appearances for the club. He played for the 2021/22 team, which finished second and earned promotion.

The most recent Birmingham City news from BirminghamLive sheds light on the future of the central defensive. Ferguson began his career at Newcastle United and had two loan spells with Birmingham City in 2012/13 and the next season. He made 34 appearances for them, helping them finish 12th and 21st. After 32 appearances at St James Park, he joined Millwall in 2015, where he spent six years.

He isn’t the only one leaving Rotherham United with a Birmingham City connection. Grant Hall, who was on loan at St Andrew’s in 2014/15 and appeared nine times, was also released.Marc Roberts
