Transfer News: Birmingham Told to Look to Plymouth Argyle to Solve Goalkeeper Issues.

Birmingham City needs to find a new goalkeeper due to Etheridge’s departure and uncertainty around Ruddy’s future for their League One season.

Callum Burton, who helped Plymouth Argyle secure promotion, is an attractive choice for teams aiming to move up. His record of clean sheets and third-tier titles makes him a valuable addition for any club seeking promotion.

With Birmingham City facing their first League One campaign in 30 years, the club must strategize during the summer transfer window. Following their relegation from the Championship, they need to rebuild their squad.

Goalkeeper Neil Etheridge will leave St Andrew’s when his contract expires next month, and with John Ruddy’s future at the club uncertain, Birmingham City needs to find a new goalkeeper for next season.

Callum Burton, recently released from Plymouth Argyle, has proven his worth at this level and could be a smart acquisition for a club aiming for promotion next year.

Burton was pivotal for Plymouth Argyle during their promotion campaign in 2022/23, stepping in when first-choice Michael Cooper was injured. His performances reassured the team and led them to success in May.

After a key performance against Sheffield Wednesday and a crucial penalty shootout save against Cheltenham Town, Burton helped Plymouth secure the League One trophy, though they lost 4-0 to Bolton Wanderers in the final.

With seven clean sheets in 18 matches last season, Burton has demonstrated his reliability and value. Given his experience in winning a third-tier title, he is a desirable target for teams needing a goalkeeper.

Despite his success, Burton found himself as a backup at Plymouth this season, leading to his departure in search of more regular playtime as he reaches a critical stage in his career.

Birmingham City needs at least one new goalkeeper this summer, potentially more if Ruddy does not stay. Etheridge departs after four years with the club, having joined from Cardiff City and made 79 appearances before being supplanted by Ruddy.

Ruddy’s contract also expires this summer, and it’s up to him whether he stays with Birmingham for the upcoming season. Regardless, Burton could be an excellent primary or backup option for Birmingham City as they aim to return to the Championship.
