Birmingham City will need to bolster their forward line next season in League One, and Macauley Langstaff from Notts County should be their top target.
HIGHLIGHTS
1. Despite being relegated, Birmingham City has the financial support and facilities to rebuild in League One, including potential player signings.
2. Jay Stansfield’s exit leaves a gap, but Birmingham is considering Macauley Langstaff as a crucial signing for their promotion bid.
3. Langstaff’s impressive goal-scoring and versatility make him an ideal leader for Birmingham City’s attack in their quest for promotion.
Birmingham City was relegated to the third tier of English football for the first time since 1995, despite a final-day win against Norwich City. However, they are hopeful of quickly returning to the Championship.
Under new ownership, Birmingham City showed ambition last year, but relegation has somewhat disrupted their progress, particularly with managerial changes. Nevertheless, they have significant financial backing to build a strong squad for League One, highlighted by the planned investment in the new Sports Quarter, which includes a new stadium and training facilities.
These state-of-the-art facilities require a team that matches their quality. Although the current situation isn’t ideal, the club hopes relegation is just a minor setback. A large portion of the squad is set to leave, either as free agents or returning to their parent clubs, necessitating substantial rebuilding.
One key departure is Jay Stansfield, a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season. With Birmingham’s permanent strikers underperforming, they need at least one new striker this summer. According to HITC, Birmingham and other clubs showed interest in Macauley Langstaff in January. While Notts County demanded £1.5 million for Langstaff then, Birmingham’s resources could meet this price.
Langstaff, at 27, is at his peak and ready for League One. Reigniting their interest in him could provide the goal-scoring prowess Birmingham needs for promotion. Langstaff has been prolific, joining Notts County from Gateshead in 2022 and scoring 41 goals in 47 games, aiding their promotion from the National League. This season, he’s continued his form in League Two, finishing as the top scorer for a mid-table Notts side.
Birmingham should aim for immediate promotion but must avoid complacency. Bigger clubs have struggled with quick returns from the third tier, like Sunderland, Leeds United, and Nottingham Forest. However, Langstaff’s goal-scoring ability could be crucial for Birmingham’s promotion push.
Langstaff can play in various attacking formations and his pace allows him to stretch defenses. With creative players around him, he can continue his prolific scoring at any level.
