Third-biggest signing set for release as Birmingham decision beckons

Birmingham City have yet to extend Ivan Sunjic’s contract, perhaps leading to his departure from St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park in the summer.

The Croatian midfielder, who joined Blues for £6.3 million from Dinamo Zagreb in 2019, is the club’s third-most expensive signing of all time, trailing only Emile Heskey and David Dunn. It would be a huge disappointment if Sunjic left for nothing after causing so much damage to the team, especially since he is still in his prime years.

It remains to be seen whether the 27-year-old will stay after Birmingham’s relegation to League One, but the decrease in league would make him a valuable player. Sunjic appeared in 36 Championship games in 2023/24, including the final-day encounter against Norwich City, falling short of the previous seasons’ totals of 40, 43, and 41 games.

Blues must consider various Sunjic elements.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to keeping the former Croatia international around. Sunjic is a fighter who would contribute to a firm foundation in midfield. He also has great stamina, is rarely injured, and has European experience from his time in his own country.

Sunjic, on the other hand, frequently suffers against a high press and has a limited passing range. His salary are also among the highest in the football club.

A large cut would be required to make a new agreement realistic, but the player may refuse to accept such conditions, thereby putting the choice out of Birmingham’s hands.
