Isaac Vassell, a former striker for Birmingham City, has joined Bath City, a team in the National League South.
After being released by Championship team Cardiff City, Vassell has been without a club for more than a year and a half. His final game for the Bluebirds was during the 2019–20 campaign. During his three-year tenure, he would only play three times for the Welsh team, so the move is quite unexpected.
Vassell might be an excellent addition for the National League South team even if he hasn’t played professionally for a couple of seasons. He joins a squad hoping to make their first National League appearance since 2012 and has a wealth of EFL experience with him.
Currently ranked fourth in the table and undefeated in their past six games, the Romans are in a rather good position. Although there are risks involved, they will be hoping that Vassell’s signing will improve their chances.
Possibly most recognized for his stints at Birmingham City and Luton Town, the now 30-year-old was formerly regarded in the highest regard. He would make his debut with the former when they were in League Two, and in the summer of 2017–18, he would move to Championship side Birmingham thanks to his accomplishments.
The Birmingham Mail revealed that the player’s transfer cost above £1 million. Harry Redknapp, the club’s manager at the time, anticipated that the player will play a significant role in the team’s future plans.
Vassell would, however, play in just 27 games in all competitions over his two years with the Blues, managing just two goals. It’s safe to say that the striker’s huge move didn’t pan out, and neither Birmingham nor Cardiff City ever saw him play at his peak.
His current level may be the National League South, but given how the previous two seasons have gone, it is quite uncertain how he will do.
Author’s Perspective
Given the amount of money that was spent on him, Birmingham supporters might recoil at the mention of Vassell. Even if his career hasn’t gone as planned, a large portion of that can be attributed to ongoing injury issues.
For the former Blues player, this might be his last chance, and if he can recreate his time at Luton, the sixth-tier team could have a very promising addition.
Nevertheless, his recent track record is scarcely inspiring, and the club is in a position where taking chances is acceptable, so this feels like a significant one.
