Following the surprise dismissal of Championship Manager of the Season nominee Liam Rosenior on Tuesday, Steve Cooper is among the early favourites to take over at Hull City.
The 44-year-old, who was considered as a managerial prospect for Birmingham City before Tony Mowbray took over at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park, has been out of work since leaving Nottingham Forest in December.
Given his first and second-tier pedigree, Cooper will undoubtedly return to the dugout at some point, and the Hull position could be a good fit. There is now an uproar about Rosenior’s resignation, so the Tigers must find a suitable replacement to keep tensions at bay.
The next manager will be charged with ensuring a top-six finish with the goal of reaching the Premier League. Cooper clearly meets the bill, given he has already been promoted once, guiding Forest to the big time via the 2022 play-offs.
He is not the only candidate for the position, however; former Hamburg manager Tim Walter is the current favourite 1/2. Cooper’s chances, by example, are 5/2.
The Telegraph says that Walter, 48, has already been shortlisted. Hull is believed to be “huge admirers” of his work, but compensation would be necessary to obtain the German’s services, as he has been unemployed since February.
Although the bookmakers’ predictions differ, it might be a close battle for Hull’s position. Employing Walter would be a huge risk because he has no experience in England. Cooper’s track record speaks for itself.
