Former Birmingham City favorite and cup winner released

Former Premier League footballer Cameron Jerome has been released from Bolton Wanderers at the age of 37, following the club’s announcement of their retained list.

Jerome, who accumulated over 200 appearances in England’s top flight and more than 300 in the Championship, has spent the last two seasons with Bolton Wanderers. During his time with the Trotters, he made 55 appearances, scoring four goals and providing one assist.

Despite making 43 appearances this season, the veteran striker averaged just 20 minutes per game, transitioning into a mentor role and imparting his experience to manager Ian Evatt’s squad. Jerome’s leadership and strength on the pitch earned him the admiration of many supporters, with some fans hoping he would transition into a coaching role at the club.

The former Stoke City, Norwich City, and Birmingham City forward became a fan favorite, especially during his cameos under Evatt, which led to a new chant in his honor during the League One play-offs: “Cameron Jerome on the bench.” Jerome made three substitute appearances during the play-offs, but despite his efforts, Bolton fell short as Oxford United and Josh Murphy secured promotion to the Championship.

Now a free agent, Jerome must decide whether to join an eleventh career club or retire after a well-rounded career. His achievements include an EFL Cup win with Birmingham in 2011, an EFL Trophy win, over 700 professional appearances, a Europa League run to the round of 32 with Stoke City, and two seasons in Turkey’s top flight with Göztepe.

Alongside Jerome, Icelandic striker Jón Dadi Bödvarsson has also been released by Bolton Wanderers, with both players’ contracts expiring on June 30, 2024.

Writer’s View

Cameron Jerome’s arrival at Bolton in January 2023 was a shrewd move by Ian Evatt, bolstering the strike force with a seasoned Premier League veteran. His experience was invaluable, often seen offering guidance during warm-ups and matches, akin to an assistant manager.

Jerome was a respected squad member and played a key role in Bolton’s play-off run to Wembley. As he approaches 38 this summer, he has undoubtedly earned a rest after a career that began in 2004 with Cardiff City.

However, if Jerome still has the desire to play, he would be an attractive prospect for League Two and National League teams looking to add experience and finesse to their squads for the upcoming season.
