Championship Managerial Shake-up: Mixed Reactions as Front-runner to be Next Birmingham City Manager Emerges.

Alex Neil is emerging as the leading candidate to become the next Birmingham City manager amid numerous changes in the Championship and beyond this summer.

In the 2023/24 season, only a few Championship managers—Kieran McKenna, Carlos Corberan, Michael Carrick, Mark Robins, and Ryan Lowe—remain in their positions from the previous year. McKenna, who led promoted Ipswich Town, is being pursued by Premier League clubs, while Corberan from West Brom is the bookmakers’ favorite to take over at Leicester, following Enzo Maresca’s move to Chelsea.

Several managerial vacancies need to be filled. David Wagner was dismissed by Norwich after losing in the play-off semi-finals, and Liam Rosenior was sacked after Hull narrowly missed the top six. Johannes Hoff Thorup, the 35-year-old manager of Danish club Nordsjælland, is expected to take over at Norwich, while Tim Walters, recently of Hamburg, is a potential replacement for Rosenior.

Scott Parker is the frontrunner to take charge at relegated Burnley, replacing Vincent Kompany, who is headed to Bayern Munich. Will Still is the favorite to become the new Sunderland manager.

Danny Rohl has received a contract extension at Sheffield Wednesday, where he achieved a remarkable feat by guiding the club to Championship safety. Wayne Rooney has returned to football management with Plymouth Argyle.

Birmingham fans have had mixed reactions to the prospect of Neil replacing Tony Mowbray, who stepped down for health reasons. Gary Rowett, another former Stoke manager, had served as interim manager for the final months of the season but couldn’t prevent the club’s relegation to League One.

In a poll conducted by BirminghamLive, Rosenior was the fans’ preferred choice, followed by Rowett. Neil, who left Stoke in December, was less popular, trailing behind Paul Heckingbottom, Dave Challinor, and Frank Lampard.
