Queens Park Rangers have confirmed that Andre Dozzell will leave the club when his contract expires this summer.
QPR opted not to extend Dozzell’s contract for an additional year, allowing the midfielder to seek new opportunities. Birmingham City could be a possible destination for Dozzell if Tony Mowbray returns as their manager this summer.
Dozzell joined Birmingham City on loan for the second half of the season, becoming Mowbray’s first signing as head coach. Mowbray and his assistant Mark Venus had pursued Dozzell for several years before finally bringing him to St Andrew’s.
“My assistant manager wanted to sign him for five years at every club we’ve been at,” Mowbray told BirminghamLive in January after acquiring Dozzell. “What a wonderful talent. I have a connection with Ipswich Town (Dozzell’s former club), having spent nine years there as a player and coach, and I played with his dad (Jason Dozzell).
“When you watch Dozzell for QPR, he’s their supply line on the pitch. He constantly plays forward, providing passes to his teammates.
“Once we develop into a possession-based team, players like him will thrive and our supporters will appreciate his talent.”
However, Dozzell fell out of favor under interim manager Gary Rowett towards the end of the season as Birmingham fought to avoid relegation. The 25-year-old appeared in 10 games for the Blues and scored the winning goal against Blackburn Rovers in February.
It remains uncertain whether Birmingham will sign Dozzell permanently this summer, a decision likely dependent on Mowbray’s potential return as manager.
