Sheffield Wednesday midfielder George Byers is reportedly on Birmingham City’s transfer radar.
Birmingham City, facing relegation to League One after multiple management changes, sees George Byers as a potential key player to elevate their performance. Byers brings skill, creativity, and experience, aligning with Birmingham’s need for midfield reinforcement.
After their relegation from the Championship, Birmingham City is preparing for life in League One.
Birmingham’s Descent to League One
The Blues controversially replaced John Eustace with Wayne Rooney in October, despite being sixth in the table. This move did not work out, as Rooney was sacked in January after only two wins from 15 games. His successor, Tony Mowbray, initially performed well but had to step down temporarily in February due to health reasons. Mark Venus, Mowbray’s assistant, took over but managed only one point from six games. Former manager Gary Rowett returned as interim head coach in March and improved the team’s performance, but couldn’t prevent relegation.
Journalist Alan Nixon reports that Mowbray is awaiting clearance from medical experts to return, which would be a significant boost for Birmingham. Next season’s League One will be highly competitive, but Birmingham will have one of the largest budgets in the division, and rebuilding the squad has already begun.
According to The Star, Birmingham is interested in out-of-contract Sheffield Wednesday midfielder George Byers. Signing Byers would be an excellent start to their summer transfer activities.
Why Birmingham Should Prioritize Signing George Byers
Byers joined Sheffield Wednesday from Swansea City in August 2021 and quickly became a fan favorite. He was one of the best midfielders in League One during his time with the Owls, playing a crucial role in their promotion-winning campaign last season. This season, he scored one goal and registered one assist in 22 Championship games, though many appearances were as a substitute. In January, he was loaned to League One side Blackpool, where he quickly became popular and provided one assist in 16 games, contributing to a significant improvement in form for Neil Critchley’s side.
Blackpool wants to re-sign Byers this summer after his contract at Hillsborough expires, and Huddersfield Town, Rotherham United, and Barnsley are also interested.
Steve Bruce Considering a Birmingham City Return
Steve Bruce, out of management since leaving West Bromwich Albion in 2022, is eyeing a remarkable return to Birmingham.
Birmingham will face competition for Byers, but with owner Tom Wagner’s ambitious plans, they will likely be an attractive option in League One. Byers would add goals, creativity, and a strong work ethic to the team, making him a valuable asset for the Blues. His technical skills would fit well with Mowbray’s possession-based style, and his experience in achieving promotion from the third tier could be crucial for Birmingham’s goal of returning to the Championship.
With Jordan James likely to depart, strengthening the midfield is essential, and Byers would be an ideal addition.
