A midweek defeat to Middlesbrough left Birmingham City just one point and one place above the relegation zone with nine games to play.

When Tom Wagner and his group purchased Blues last year, you can’t imagine they envisaged the club would be battling to avoid falling to League One in their first full season.

Championship Table (As it stands March 14th)
Team P GD Pts
17 Plymouth Argyle 37 -7 41
18 Blackburn Rovers 37 -13 41
19 Stoke City 37 -15 41
20 QPR 37 -14 39
21 Birmingham City 37 -16 39
22 Huddersfield Town 37 -19 38
23 Sheffield Wednesday 37 -25 38
24 Rotherham United 37 -47 19

But that’s precisely what’s taking place, and all eyes are on the owners for their audacious decision to switch out John Eustace for Wayne Rooney.

The England icon took over a team that was competitive going into the playoffs, but a terrible few months saw them tumble down the standings. Tony Mowbray’s appointment didn’t stop that, and now Blues are fighting to stay alive, with Mark Venus leading the team while the former Sunderland manager heals from sickness..

Birmingham City’s goalscoring problems

The owners will be questioned about more than just the managerial choices, though, as Birmingham’s inaction in January—especially the fact that they failed to sign a new number nine—was shocking.

With nine goals in the Championship thus far, Jay Stansfield leads the Blues in scoring. He has been a great addition to the team.

He has only scored two league goals in 12 games in 2024, though, so his form has been questionable for a while even though it wasn’t addressed in the New Year.

Although injuries are keeping Lukas Jutkiewicz from becoming the player he once was, he still poses a threat from the air. Scott Hogan’s story is likewise comparable.

Oliver Burke and Tyler Roberts, two forward players with fitness concerns, have also failed to score in the league.

Thus, the Blues are facing a serious issue at the moment, and it seems like they are holding out hope that Jordan James, the midfielder, or Stansfield can continue to contribute.

To put it plainly, depending on two kids to help the club get out of this predicament is unacceptable.

Birmingham City’s January transfer regret

The new owners’ goals are evident, and it’s fair to say that they’ve made great progress toward enhancing the stadium and mend fences with the supporters, who have endured a great deal over the years.

But the most crucial thing for every football team is what occurs on the field.

The Blues shouldn’t go down that path in any case, as we know they weren’t in a position to just throw money at anyone in January.

Even so, there would have been room to add a striker, and if needed, the team could have moved Hogan or Jutkiewicz to assist in making that happen.

Failing to do so could come at a high cost, since Birmingham is once again on the verge of Championship relegation, and it’s questionable if they have the strength to escape this situation this time.
