Birmingham City will compete with Premier League teams for players.

Eiran Cashin of Derby County is a player that Birmingham City is interested in moving for in January, but they will have stiff competition from Premier League teams.

According to Team Talk, Wayne Rooney’s team is looking for the 22-year-old as they want to move back up the Championship rankings, but they’re not the only ones. The Irish defender is reportedly the target of Middlesbrough as well, although they may possibly lose out. This is due to rumors that four Premier League teams, led by Brighton, are vying for his signing.

The left-footed center-back was being pursued by the Seagulls in the summer, but he chose to stay and build his reputation with the Rams. He has achieved that, but Paul Warne’s team also appears poised to profit from Cashin as they grind it out in the top six. Though he won’t be by alone, Roberto De Zerbi is probably going to be first in line.

Cashin, an Ireland Under-21 representative, is also being pursued by West Ham United, the current Champions of the Europa Conference League, and Burnley, a failing team. Even Sheffield United, whose manager Chris Wilder has only been in post for a few hours, has been reported to have shown interest. There’s little doubt about it: clubs will be circling Pride Park like vultures as 2024 rolls around.

Despite the fact that Cashin has experience playing under Rooney, this makes it much more difficult for the Blues to land their man. Birmingham may benefit if the player, who was born in Mansfield, decides to stay in the Midlands.

He progressed through Derby’s levels, and the team has already expressed its intention to retain him along with fellow prospect Max Bird as they prepare to return to the Championship. With just 18 games in the second tier out of his 92 senior outings, the young defender is still mostly unknown.

That doesn’t seem to be stopping a large number of teams from vying for his signature, though, and a January transfer seems all but certain.

Author’s Perspective

During the most recent transfer window, it appeared as though Cashin may be moving, but negotiations fell through in the end. That always left his future uncertain, and the rumors have already begun as we turn back to the ridiculous season of the open window.

It makes sense why Birmingham would find him appealing. He’s a left-footed athlete who is tough and gritty, which makes him a unique asset. Recall that Rooney helped him make his breakthrough at Derby, and he appeared at ease with the high-pressing technique that the former England striker favored.

The young player is incredibly talented; despite only being six feet tall, he can ping a crossfield ball, and last season he finished in the top five in League One for interceptions. It seemed improbable that he will spend his bright future in Derby County’s white community.

Will it be in Birmingham City’s Blue? Even with the Rooney connection, there are so many important players in the game that it seems improbable.
