Birmingham City and West Brom have reportedly expressed interest in signing two Sheffield Wednesday players.

The Blues will play in League One this season, while the Baggies’ play-off tie with Southampton remains evenly matched following a goalless draw at the Hawthorns. It’s been just over a week since the regular season concluded, but the rumour mill has gone into overdrive, and we already know of two prospective transfers that might take place this summer.

Birmingham are considering signing George Byers for next season, as reported by The Star. He is out of contract with Hillsborough this season, and his future is uncertain.

Byers was loaned out to Blackpool in January, despite the Owls’ initial desire to keep him. The 27-year-old appeared 16 times for the Seasiders this season, helping them finish seventh in League One, and they are apparently keen in keeping him. Birmingham, Huddersfield Town, Rotherham United, and Barnsley are among the clubs interested, while Oxford United and Bolton Wanderers have inquired, according to the Star.

He has played for Blackpool, Portsmouth, and the Owls in League One, gaining valuable experience. Byers has made 76 appearances in the third tier, scoring 12 goals and assisting seven times, but he only scored once during his most recent stay at Bloomfield Road. In November, he scored against Birmingham in Wayne Rooney’s first win, resulting in a 2-1 defeat.

The Star reports that West Brom are interested in signing Josh Windass. The Baggies are interested in signing the former Rangers attacker, although they will face competition from Stoke City, Hull City and recently promoted Derby County.

The 30-year-old, like Byers, is out of contract this summer, but negotiations are underway to keep him in South Yorkshire. He has six goals and two assists in 25 games this season and is a fan favourite.

Windass has spent the majority of his career in English football’s second division, scoring 27 goals and assisting 12 times in 129 games. His greatest season came in 2020/21, when he scored nine goals and assisted six times despite his side finishing last place.
