This season, Scott Hogan of Birmingham City has been a disappointment for the Blues in front of goal, scoring just twice in all competitions.
The Irish international moved across the city to St Andrew’s in January 2020, first joining on a short-term loan from Aston Villa. He is currently in his fourth full season at the school.
But that summer, the Blues decided to make the agreement official and signed Hogan to a four-year contract from their fierce rivals.
Hogan took the hard route to the top, playing for the likes of Woodley Sports, Halifax Town, Mossley, Stocksbridge Park Steels, Ashton United and Hyde, before earning a chance with EFL side Rochdale in 2013.
After a stellar League Two campaign with The Dale, he was rewarded with a summer 2014 transfer to Brentford, a West London team. This is the area in which Hogan truly became well-known.

Hogan endured a nightmare first season at Griffin Park, playing just two games in all competitions, totaling 32 minutes, before tearing his ACL in September.
Not exactly the best beginning for the striker hoping to establish himself in the Championship following a significant transfer from League Two. He’d also miss the vast majority of the 2015/16 season, only returning to the field in March 2016.
Accordingly, Hogan missed time due to injury between September 2014 and March 2016. There had been a startling 18 months without football.
He made his return for the Bees against Blackburn Rovers on 19th March 2016, playing just 14 minutes as the club looked to ease him back into action.
He’d have two further eight-minute cameos from the bench in wins against Ipswich and Bolton, before playing 18 minutes against Bristol City in April. It was against the Robins that Hogan would score his first Brentford goal, scoring the equaliser to rescue a point for his club.
He’d back this up with a further two goals in a 14-minute appearance against Cardiff in the next game, before finishing the season with two goals in the further two games against Fulham and Huddersfield.
Hogan finished the season with seven goals in just 172 minutes of football, an incredible record for someone returning from a serious injury.

The following season, he would make an impression for the Bees, scoring 14 goals in the Championship before January, which encouraged Aston Villa to approach them in their pursuit of promotion to the Premier League.

Hogan scored just one goal for Villa in the second half of the 2016–17 campaign, showing signs of trouble.
The next season, he’d play eight minutes in the club’s play-off final defeat against Fulham and score just six goals in the league.
For Hogan, the next season was even worse. In all competitions, he made just 15 appearances and scored just twice as Villa eventually secured promotion.
Hogan joined Stoke City on loan since there was obviously no longer any place for him at Villa, especially with them in the Premier League.
Before Villa shocked everyone by recalling him in January and loaning him to fierce rivals Birmingham, he only managed two goals for the Potters. With seven goals and a permanent transfer to St Andrew’s, Hogan performed better for the Blues.
After the Blues’ victory in midweek, Rooney took some time to thank their supporters.
He would score seven goals for the Blues the next season before tallying ten goals in the league to reach double figures in 2021–2022. Although he struggled this season, Hogan replicated the mark the next season, scoring precisely ten goals.
Hogan has only scored two goals in 17 appearances, and just one goal came in the league. Ever since Wayne Rooney arrived, Hogan has made an occasional appearance, but he is now more often benched.
It’s unclear what Hogan’s future holds because his contract expires at the end of the current campaign. He still has a lot of life left in him at just 31 years old.
