Birmingham City confirmed their released and retained list on Saturday evening with a contract extension for midfielder Keshi Anderson
Jonson Clarke-Harris, a League One goal-getter from the Midlands, joined Rotherham United earlier this week.Blues can strive a little higher this summer.
The decision to extend Keshi Anderson’s contract for another year is wise, given the squad still requires League One experience.
Anderson was only a frequent pick for John Eustace and Gary Rowett last season, but he showed enough quality to justify another year given that the team is in the third tier. He was instrumental in keeping Juninho Bacuna and Siriki Dembele out of the team during the season’s final weeks due to his game knowledge and teamwork.
While Anderson’s penchant to hit the trigger too late cost him goals and limited him to only two assists, we can all see the benefit in having him around. The 29-year-old is a skilled player who earns a lower wage than other Blues players in previous years.
He has previously gained promotion from League One. Anderson was a member of the Blackpool team that earned promotion to the Championship through the play-offs in 2021. He began their 2-1 victory over Lincoln City in the final at Wembley.
Alex Pritchard, who joined the Blues from Sunderland in January, has two years left on his contract to redeem himself. The 31-year-old midfielder is another League One promotion winner.
Pritchard shined for Sunderland in 2022/23, scoring four goals and assisting nine times in the regular season before helping them overcome Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 under the arch to secure a spot in the Championship.
Another player in the Blues’ squad has already ripped up League One. However, considering the way his debut season at Blues ended, Dembele’s future at the club remains uncertain.
