Birmingham City engage in talks with 60-year-old in search for Wayne Rooney’s successor

Birmingham City have engaged in talks with former Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray as they look to secure a replacement for Wayne Rooney, according to the Daily Mirror.

Blues are currently in need of a new manager after sacking Rooney earlier this week following Blues’ 3-0 defeat against Leeds United.

That result summed up his time at the helm at St Andrew’s, with the former England international winning just two games in total during his time in charge of the Midlands side.

These results caused the club to slip down from sixth position to 20th – a decline that has horrified their supporters who were baffled when Rooney came in to replace the capable John Eustace.

Now in a relegation scrap, they are in need of a capable pair of hands to take them forward for at least the remainder of the season before the board potentially reassess their options at the end of the campaign.

Gary Rowett, who was most recently in charge of Millwall but has also been at Birmingham before, is another leading candidate for the top job.

That’s according to the Daily Mirror, who have identified him and Mowbray as two men who are high up Birmingham’s shortlist at this point.

Tony Mowbray and Gary Rowett’s previous managerial spells

They were going for back-to-back promotions at that point, making last term an impressive one for Mowbray.

Results may have gone against the 60-year-old during the latter stages of his tenure there this term, but his departure came as a bit of a surprise.

Rowett’s departure from the Lions also came as a bit of a surprise, considering he arrived there in 2019 and there were no rumours about him potentially leaving before his departure was announced.

It seems as though both parties were willing to part ways though.

Tony Mowbray would be a steady appointment for Birmingham City

Perhaps “steady” is an insult to Mowbray considering he did such a remarkable job last term.

He also did very well at Blackburn Rovers and deserves more credit for his work there than he got in the end.

And he would probably do a good job with Blues considering the expertise he has.

It would be difficult to see the owners wanting to divert from a passing style, so bringing in Mowbray would be ideal for them.

Rowett would also be a solid appointment – but it would be difficult to see the Midlands side appointing him because of his style.
