Birmingham City 3-1 Ipswich Town: Mark Venus’ assessment

Mark Venus, the interim manager of Birmingham City, expressed gratitude to the Ipswich Town supporters for their encouragement of Tony Mowbray during yesterday’s Portman Road match. Last Monday, it was revealed that Town legend Mowbray would require a six- to eight-week medical leave of absence from St Andrew’s management.

The fifth minute saw a wild outburst of applause from the Ipswich fans, who were disappointed that ‘Mogga’ was unable to make it back to a town he truly loves.

Venus, who was also a vital component in Town’s promotion-winning 1999–00 season, clarified, “He’s still recovering, he needs a bit of time off.”

“People don’t think their issues are being taken seriously.”

“He underwent a medical procedure, including surgery, and is currently recuperating. He’s alright.

“Today’s minute of applause was incredible. I believe that everyone in the football community has shown him amazing support.

“On my end, I can’t even begin to count how many individuals have reached out and sent their best wishes. I’m sure he finds it hard to believe.

Venus remarked after the loss, which puts Birmingham three points above the relegation zone, “It was a tough afternoon, to a point.”

“We had a poor start to the game, but we eventually caught up. I felt that we sort of contained without really posing a threat for a while in the second half. However, our squad just didn’t have enough opportunities in their final third.

“I thought our surrendered goals were quite disappointing. We need to perform better because we’ve already experienced them in the changing room. It is hardly possible to visit elite teams and concede goals.

“I believe that a little credit ought to be given to them (Ipswich). They were really purposeful, played with great skill, and played on the front foot. They are leading three teams to the very end of the season, and if they can win it, they will have a huge pot at the conclusion.

Regarding Conor Chaplin’s first goal, he stated: “To be honest, I don’t think it was offside.” Upon seeing the replay, it appeared to be in play.
