Emyr Huws, a former midfielder for Birmingham City, has decided to end his playing career. At just thirty years old, the 11-cap Wales international has decided to hang up the boots.
Huws was let go in the summer after Colchester United, a League Two team, decided not to renew his contract. He has not been able to sign with a club since going unsigned, therefore he announced on Instagram that he was hanging up his boots.
“While writing this message, I never thought I’d be writing this shortly after my 30th birthday,” he wrote on his profile. For those of you who know me, you will understand that since I was six years old, this football adventure has been my life.
God alone knows how much assistance Huws has required on this journey, but he is fortunate to have had a ton of support along the road. With your support and my perseverance, I was able to find a path even in the worst of circumstances. I am grateful to everyone of you.
“After a lot of difficult lessons, I’ve realized that I’m intended for something else and that this road isn’t for me anymore. I want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has supported me along the way and helped me grow into the man I am today.
“The game is coming to a close, but I’m not done yet. My goal is to use all of my knowledge and insight to encourage and uplift as many people as I can. I appreciate you all and hope that you all use this brief life to pursue your aspirations.
Huws attended St Andrew’s during Lee Clark’s tenure. On the last day of the 2013–14 season, he helped the team avoid relegation by scoring two goals in 17 appearances while on loan from Manchester City. He signed in January 2014. Later on, he played for Huddersfield Town, the aforementioned Colchester, and Wigan Athletic before moving on to Cardiff City. During his 11-year playing career, he made 145 appearances before retiring.
