Exclusive: Sunderland make move to oust Birmingham to available manager

Sunderland make move for Liam Rosenior – sources

Sunderland has expressed interest in appointing Liam Rosenior as their new manager, according to sources from Football Insider. The Black Cats are in search of a new leader following the dismissal of Michael Beale in February, with Mike Dodds serving as interim manager until the end of the season.

Rosenior has also caught the attention of Birmingham City, who have included him in their shortlist for the managerial position, as Tony Mowbray’s return to coaching next season appears unlikely despite his improving health.

Now, Sunderland is poised to enter the competition with Birmingham to secure the services of the 39-year-old as their new manager. Rosenior has earned recognition from several other EFL clubs due to his successful tenure at Hull City and his commendable role as assistant manager alongside Wayne Rooney at Derby County.

Despite narrowly missing out on a spot in the Championship playoffs, Rosenior was unexpectedly sacked by Hull City, leading to widespread surprise within the football community.

Sunderland aims to assemble a competitive squad capable of challenging for a top-six finish in the Championship next season. Their recent campaign concluded disappointingly with just one victory in their final seven matches, resulting in a 16th-place finish in the table.

Rosenior’s achievements, particularly leading Hull to seventh place in the Championship before his dismissal, have put him on the radar of several clubs.

Birmingham holds the Englishman in high regard and considers him as one of the leading candidates should Mowbray be unable to continue his role next season. The club is eager to make an immediate comeback to the Championship following their relegation after a deeply disappointing season at St Andrew’s.
