Barnsley still pushing for deal to sign former Derby County captain…

Conor Hourihane’s return to Barnsley appears imminent as the Tykes aim to bring back the former Derby County captain. Barnsley, who recently appointed Darrell Clarke as manager following his departure from Cheltenham, are preparing for another season in League One after their play-off loss to Bolton. According to the Barnsley Chronicle, negotiations with Hourihane are ongoing, with the club keen on signing the ex-Derby skipper, one of six players released after Derby’s promotion.

Hourihane is looking to transition into coaching, having worked towards his badges while at Derby and conducting sessions with Aston Villa’s under-16s. A potential player/coach role at Barnsley has been suggested, and a deal for the 33-year-old could be finalized this week. This move would mark a heartfelt return to Barnsley, where Hourihane previously won the EFL Trophy and secured promotion to the Championship before joining Villa in 2017.

Reflecting on his departure from Derby, Hourihane said, “Two incredible years with the Rams have come to an end. From the first goal against Oxford to finishing with League One promotion. Captaining the club to the Championship was a great honor for me. Achieving promotion was my goal when I joined, and ending on that note feels right. I wish the club all the best for next season and hope it continues to progress. Thank you, Rams.”

Hourihane played a pivotal role in Derby’s promotion last season, scoring a crucial winner in a 3-2 victory against Burton Albion at Pride Park. He made 47 appearances and scored six goals during the season.
